To start, I found it hard to get through this book. The story was extremely slow, which is expected when reading a world builder for a series. The story was also not original in the slightest. It was a basic Beauty and the Beast plot with some faeries and magic thrown in.
A Court of Thorns and Roses occurs in a world of humans and faeries. Faeries are immortal beings that can use magic and transform into large beasts. We follow this young girl named Feyre who is forced to learn how to hunt to provide for her father and two sisters. One day she kills this humungous wolf, which turns out to be a faerie.
She is then found by another faerie looking to collect a debt by giving her a choice. Feyre can either come with him to live in the lands of the faeries called Prythian or she can die. She chooses to leave the human Realm in hopes of living long enough to escape from her captor.
It turns out Feyre was taken by one of the High Fae who rule Prythian and his name is Tamlin of the Spring Court. While she stays at the spring court, she learns about the history of Prythian and grows fond of Tamlin. They grow closer and closer, but there is a great evil that has its grip on Tamlin. To protect Feyre, he sends her back to the Human Realm to live the rest of her life with her family.
However, Feyre is madly in love with Tamlin and returns to Prythian to be at Tamlin’s side. Returning to the Spring Court, she finds everything in ruin and her former hand servant is the only one left. She tells Feyre of where Tamlin was taken and fills her in about the evil High Queen that took him. The High Queen named Amarantha was once in love with Tamlin and tricked him to steal his power and every other High Fae is Prythian.
Feyre goes to rescue and professes her love to Tamlin. However, Amarantha will not release Tamlin and his magic until Feyre proves her love through three trials or by solving a riddle. Feyre is no genius, so she fights to survive in each trial, passing each one with the help of some High Fae who wishes to bring down the High Queen. She makes it to the final trial but is tricked into killing Tamlin. She passes by stabbing him in the heart and finding out that his heart was turned to stone by the curse that the queen places on him.
But wait, the High Queen lied about realizing them and attempted to kill Feyre. With the end of her life in close pursuit, Feyre solved the riddle that guaranteed that she and everyone else would be freed. Once freed, Tamlin is overcome with anger and kills the queen.
Feyre solved the riddle, but it was too late for her. The queen did too much damage and killed her. However, she demonstrated extraordinary resolve when she faced the queen so the High Fae of each of the 7 courts granted a portion of the magic to her. Therefore, saving her life and turning her into a High Fae.
I thought this plot was very basic and unoriginal. The girl is taken from her family to live with this dangerous beast that is the ruler of this land. However, this beast is cursed by another woman that he wronged and the only way to break the curse is for the beast to get a human woman to fall in love with them. The girl leaves the beast to face unimaginable danger but returns to save her.
I will continue reading the series and keep you updated on how it goes. Thank you for reading with Boundless Boox!
